RION and Tarrell began talking about the upcoming journey. Rion asked Lerdon and Jathran if he could rent one of their horses for Tarrell to ride.

Lerdon looked surprised. “Rent him? You can borrow him, Rion. It’ll save me having to figure out how I’m to pay to stable him for these next two weeks. I was afraid before I’d have to sell him, and I’ve had Bramble for three years, now. I didn’t want to have to part with him.”

Jathran said, “The same would normally go for Blaze, but he’s recovering from a stone he picked up. He’ll be fine in a few days. Fortunately, I won’t have need of him while I’m guarding your shop. But if he were hale, I’d certainly let you use him. I’ll not take advantage of your kind heart, Rion, not after all you did for us on our trip. The only mistake we made was in leaving you. You always saw us through, no matter what mess we got into. I never thought we’d escape from the Elves with our lives. We only did thanks to you.”

Rion was surprised and touched. “But the Elves were my fault, for insisting we bring Thorn to them.”

“And Gar and maybe Ara are alive now because you did,” Lerdon said. “And how many of us would have died crossing the marsh or the river? Between the snakes’ poison and the insects’ diseases, things a sword can’t help you fight, we all might have died. It all worked out, in the end.”

“I’m glad you think so kindly of me,” Rion said sincerely.

They smiled at him and then Tarrell called them into the kitchen to help pack food for the trip.

Rion wondered if Lerdon and Jathran might even be able to find some benefit from his having aided Circe, as well, but he couldn’t ask them. He still hadn’t said anything to the others about her. He’d decided not to. What was past was past. He’d put it behind him, as Thorn had told him to.

He felt a pang of longing as he thought of Thorn. He still thought of him by that name, even though he now knew his given name was Eladar, from the message. He’d translated it all now. Elanara had wanted him to know; he was sure of it. He felt much more than a pang of longing as her face flashed before his mind’s eye, and he sighed.

Even before meeting Circe, Elanara had been strong in his thoughts. Recently though, he’d started dreaming about Elanara. At first they’d only been dreams of her looking sadly into the stream in the white room in Erenia, or sitting alone in her bedroom. But lately they’d been a different kind of dream. He’d started being in the dreams, too. He was no longer just watching her, as if he were invisible. She’d looked at him and come to him and kissed him. Two nights ago, she’d brought him into her bed, and they’d been kissing and touching when Tarrell had woken him up.
